MODERN GAGOK
About
MODERNGAGOK is a creative traditional Korean music ensemble that shares the everyday stories of contemporary life through modern interpretations of Korean sounds. Founded by Yoona Kim in 2016, MODERNGAGOK blends the beauty of Jeongga (traditional Korean vocal music based on poetry) with modern influences, using unique instruments like the ajaeng (a traditional string instrument).
Kim became captivated by Jeongga, formed the group with vocalist Ji Min A and Piri & Shaenghwang player Nayeon Lee with the aim of creating music that combines the elegance of Jeongga and Jeonggak (traditional Korean court music) in a modern context.
As the artistic director and composer of MODERNGAGOK, Kim has led the ensemble through various notable artistic projects, including being selected as the Artist of the Month at Jeongdong Theater's Cheongchunmanbal in 2017, as well as participating in the 2017-2021 Exciting Arts Journey, the 2019 Surrim Cultural Foundation, and the 2019 Korean Cultural Center in Berlin artist residency.
In 2019, MODERNGAGOK released their debut album "Modern gagok", followed by two EPs, Unlimited and Ordinary Day, in 2021. The group is currently preparing for the release of their second full-length album in 2025.
Currently, Kim continues to serve as the artistic director and resident composer of MODERNGAGOK, pushing the boundaries of Korean traditional music and bringing it to new audiences worldwide.
